On August 20, OpenRouter quietly listed stealth/ox-alpha, an anonymous, free model whose real-world coding results beat several closed frontier models, triggering an industry guessing game and spotlighting China's stealth-model strategy.
On August 20, the leading model aggregator OpenRouter quietly added a new entry: stealth/ox-alpha. It carried no company name, no parameter count and no technical report, and its price read as two zeros. Because “ox” means bull in English, Chinese internet users soon nicknamed it the “Niu Lai” (bull is coming) model.
The mystery model performed strikingly well. One independent researcher gave it ten real software-engineering tasks drawn from the DeepSWE benchmark: Ox Alpha completed eight, an 80 percent pass rate, beating Claude Fable 5 at 65 percent and GPT-5.6 Sol at 52 percent. The CEO of Stripe tested it directly and was left with just two words: quite impressive. Ox Alpha climbed to the top of the OpenRouter leaderboard and set a daily usage record.
